Shapeoko 5 CNC router review - Carbide 3D desktop CNC machine

The Shapeoko line has been a staple of the desktop CNC router market for years, and the Shapeoko 5 represents a significant refinement rather than a revolution. Carbide 3D has focused on rigidity improvements, a redesigned Z-axis, and better dust collection integration.

Assembly of the Shapeoko 5 XL took approximately 8 hours for two people with basic tools. The instruction manual and online video guides are comprehensive, and Carbide 3D support is responsive. The new linear rail system on the X and Y axes is noticeably smoother than the V-wheel system on previous models.

In our cutting tests, the Shapeoko 5 handled hardwoods (maple, walnut, cherry) with excellent surface finish using the recommended Makita trim router. Feed rates of 80-100 IPM in 1/4-inch passes produced clean edges with minimal tearout. Aluminum cutting is possible with the right tooling and conservative speeds, but the machine is clearly optimized for wood and plastics.

Carbide Create, the included CAD/CAM software, is beginner-friendly but limited for complex projects. Most experienced users will want to pair the Shapeoko 5 with Vectric VCarve or Fusion 360 for more advanced toolpath generation. The Carbide Motion controller software is reliable and well-designed.
